Son shot by police as he tries to behead his mum in street with a huge axe

Police have shot a man in the street while he was trying to decapitate his own mother.

Officers arrived initially to reports of a separate incident - a car crash. However as they arrived the mother ran terrified from the building, chased by her son wielding a large axe.

The son managed to land a blow to her head before police shot him in the road, officers said.

Police in San Jose, California, told local paper The Mercury that both survived but are seriously ill in hospital.

The paper said officers shot the man who was chasing and hacking at his mother with the axe in the middle of a South San Jose street on Wednesday morning.


San Jose police said that both the 26-year-old suspect and his mother were taken to the hospital and are listed in stable condition, including the mother, who was reportedly hit in the head.

Their identities have not yet been released.

Police were initially called at 7.11am to Lansing Avenue for reports of a traffic collision.

Arriving in the area, officers instead found themselves amid a chaotic scene where the suspect was chasing his mother with an axe out of their home.

"We observed him strike the mother with an axe," Lt Tom Sims told the paper.

"And unfortunately [officers] had to discharge their firearms to stop his behaviour."
