One dead in horror crash as digger falls from lorry and crushes car 'containing 4 passengers' (photos)

At least one person has died after a large digger fell from an articulated lorry on to a car filled with passengers after crashing into a bus.

The lorry is understood to have lost control and collided with a First Bus before the JCB toppled off and crushed those inside the car.

Two people are thought to have been seriously injured and witnesses described seeing 'four passengers' in the car following the incident at the entrance to a works site in Rutherglen, Glasgow.

One witness said the cars under the diggers had been crushed beyond all recognition.

Emergency services were called to the Cathkin Relief Road at about 12.30pm, the Rutherglen Reformer reports.

One man at the scene told the paper: "One of the big lorries was carrying a digger on the back of it and it has toppled on to a car.

"It looks as if it is one of the diggers from where they are building the new road, they were coming in or out and it has come off the lorry.

"It looks really bad."

Another witness told Glasgow Live: "The truck appeared to lose control as it came down the hill.

"It hit a lampost and the JCB came off the back of the truck and the bus crashed into it.

"There's a car in the ditch at the side of the road and there's a car under the JCB. We've heard there are two people in it.

"They've put a screen up around the JCB so you can't see what's happening but you can see that the car is still there beneath it."

The incident happened at the entrance to works for the Cathkin Relief Road, but a spokeswoman for contractors Land Engineering told Mirror Online the digger was not part of their work.

She said it was “a very sad, unfortunate coincidence”.

Officers are unable to confirm details at present but did say the road is expected to remain closed for some time.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "It's a very serious road crash.

"Fernhill Road at Croftfoot Road is closed and will be closed for some time."

MP for Rutherglen Margaret Ferrier tweeted: "Devastated to hear of the incident today in my constituency of Rutherglen - my thoughts are with all involved."
