Oil-Rig Helicopter Crash in Norway Leaves 11 Dead, 2 Missing

A helicopter, Eurocopter 225, carrying thirteen persons has crashed in the city of Bergen, Norway leaving 11 dead and 2 people missing.

According to reports from rescuers, the helicopter which was totally destroyed was flying from the Gulfaks oil field to Bergen, a centre for the North Sea oil and gas industry and had eleven Norwegians, one Briton and an Italian on board.


The helicopter crashed near the small island of Turoey, just west of the village of Solsvik and photos from the scene showed thick smoke coming from an area of rocky islets. Oil company Statoil, has temporarily grounded all helicopters of the same type.

A rescue operation for the missing persons is well underway as Police Spokesperson, Morten Kronen said firefighters, medical workers, divers are enroute to the scene of the crash.
